What is the AR Cloud ?

The simple definition of the AR Cloud is a persistent 3D digital copy of the real world. The more technical definition of the AR Cloud is that it is a machine-readable, 1:1 scale models of the world that is continuously updated in real-time. It is a collection of billions of machine-readable datasets, point clouds, and descriptors, aligned with real- world coordinates; a living, shared, “soft copy” of the world created by scanning physical features around us in which persistent augmented reality experiences reside.

Why does AR Cloud Matter ?

Experts believe the AR Cloud will become the single most important software infrastructure in the history of computing, far bigger than Google’s search index and Facebook’s social graph. The AR Cloud will become the operating system for the spatial era. Not only will it power planet-scale, multi-user AR experiences, but it will also contribute to and derive value from self-driving cars, drones, and other connected devices and buildings.

How do we build the AR Cloud ?

There are three major components of the AR Cloud:
- A scalable and shareable machine readable representation of the world aligned with real world coordinates . It could for instance be implemented with point-clouds.
- The ability to instantly localize (align the world’s soft-copy with the world itself) from anywhere and on multi devices
- The ability to place virtual content in the world’s soft-copy and interact with it in realtime, on-device and remotely

Why was the OARC formed ?

To address problems which prevent the development of AR cloud technologies, data and services based on principles of openness and interoperability to connect the digital and physical worlds while respecting peoples rights to privacy and freedom.

What is the mission of the Open AR Cloud ?

Our mission is to drive the development of open and interoperable AR Cloud technology, data and standards to connect the physical and digital worlds for the benefit of all.

We believe AR cloud technology will profoundly change the way we see and interact with each other and our physical surroundings. We are dedicated to creating standards, guidelines, tools, and data required to build a better world. We know that, above all, we must protect & preserve our individual and collective freedoms, privacy, dignity and opportunity…for one and all.

What form of organization is Open AR Cloud ?

The Open AR Cloud organization is incorporated in the United States and has filed for tax exemption under clauses of the 501 (c) code of the US Internal Revenue Service.
